My First Post: An Animal that Interests Me

Newfoundland dogs greatly interest me because of their size, strength, and loyalty. I first heard about this dog breed when I read about the Lewis and Clark expedition. Seaman, the Newfoundland that accompanied the men, protected the explorers from enemies they met along the way such as grizzly bears. This dog breed has been recorded as having the same size as a baby elephant. Newfoundlands have been given the nickname “gentle giants” because of their calm temperament, protective instinct, and sheer strength. Although this dog has many positives of being a great household pet it has a serious upkeep. Since it was originally bred for cold and wet weather, the Newfoundland has a double coat with must be shaved in warm weather or it will cause the dog to overheat. Another negative is because of its size, like all dogs in the giant category, Newfoundlands could have serious health issues if they are not kept in the best of shape. But to keep this on a positive note here are some videos that demonstrate how AWESOME these dogs are!!!
